Harmony guests support Ostional National Wildlife Refuge with a new conservation fund

On March 22, 2021, representatives from Fundecodes, Harmony Projects, Ostional National Wildlife Refuge and Tempisque Conservation Area gathered in Nicoya to sign an agreement of cooperation that promises to aid conservation efforts and sustainable development in the refuge.

The intention of the partnership established between Fundecodes, an NGO based in Hojancha, and Harmony Projects, a social enterprise with hospitality businesses in Playa Guiones, is to build a fund that will offer ongoing support for Ostional National Wildlife Refuge. The fund is designed to grow continuously through a monthly donation from Harmony Projects that is equal to $1 per guest per night of lodging sold at their hospitality properties: The Harmony Hotel, The Sunset Shack, and Casa Harmony.

The fund will be an important financial resource for meeting the goals of the refuge’s 10-year strategic plan. Key initiatives include: making important improvements to infrastructure and communications, enhancing the volunteer program, increasing the presence of park rangers, designing school education programs, promoting the refuge to visitors and the community, and engaging with the local tourism sector to promote long term sustainability.

As a social enterprise, Harmony Projects aims to have a positive impact on the local community and environment through its business operations. The organization recognizes the unique ecosystem and natural beauty of the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge are key factors for the appeal and success of its hotel properties in Playa Guiones. As such, Harmony Projects welcomes the opportunity to invest a portion of its tourist revenue to protect the environment those visitors have come to experience and enjoy.

Fundecodes works to balance human development and business productivity with the conservation of natural resources and biodiversity in the Tempisque Conservation Area. The organization collaborates and actively participates in the creation, management, administration and consolidation of the Protected Wilderness Areas of the Chorotega region, and promotes actions that promote the quality of life of rural villagers and local communities.

Through their partnership, Harmony Projects and Fundecodes hope to inspire more hotels and vacation rental properties within and around the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge to participate in similar initiatives.
